SUMMARY:November 15: Free Speaker Event on Birds
DESCRIPTION:We will have our own Cape resident George Maurer talk to us about birds.  He was a 2023 Habitat Hero\, in part because he established a backyard that attracts birds… over 70 (seventy) different species of birds !  He will present what he has done\, and how that impacts the birds’ lives in the Cape.  He plans to address the decline in bird numbers and the causes. He also will present how we can help support bird numbers by creating structurally diverse habitat for them using native plants. \nSilent Auction 6:30pm featuring nature artwork from local artists inspired by nature in and around the community.  Photos\, paintings\, stained glass\, carved wooden bowls\, sea glass and more!  As last year\, many of these art pieces will be a valuable addition to your decor\, with representations of life by the Chesapeake Bay. \nJoin us\, enjoy food and drinks\, learn about our birds\, and find this perfect art for your house. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM.  Speaker at 7:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Free Speaker at the CSC Clubhouse March 5\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Megalodons\, Mermaids\, and Climate Change: Combating misinformation about the ocean\, weather\, and climate change . . . and a little fun. \nMisinformation now spreads like wildfire. From misleading headlines to non-expert influencers and cherry-picking of data it can be like the wild\, wild west out there. Marine scientist Ellen Prager and meteorologist Dave Jones recently released a book to combat misinformation\, provide accurate science in an easily digestible format with humor thrown in. They answer frequently asked and wacky questions they and colleagues get about the ocean\, atmosphere\, weather\, and climate change including a scatter of cartoon-like illustrations. Ellen and Dave will talk about misinformation\, share some of their favorite questions and answers in their new book (fun included)\, and discuss the need for broader public and community engagement. They’ll also be available afterwards to chat\, sell\, and sign books. \nBios \nDr. Ellen Prager is a marine scientist and author\, widely recognized for her expertise and ability to make science understandable and entertaining. She is the chief scientist at StormCenter Communications\, was previously the advisor to Celebrity Cruises in the Galapagos Islands\, has appeared on The Today Show\, Good Morning America\, CNN\, Fox News\, The Weather Channel\, and more\, has published numerous popular science and children’s books and was a consultant on Disney’s movie Moana. Dave Jones is the CEO and founder of StormCenter Communications\, spent a decade as an on-air meteorologist for NBC4 in Washington DC\, hosts Summits for broadcast meteorologists\, leads an award-winning science-based production team\, has tens of thousands of followers on his YouTube Channel\, and created GeoCollaborate\, a patented technology that allows synchronous sharing of geospatial data across platforms to improve situational awareness and decision-making.
