February 13, 2026First Flowers in a BOX—Hard to Find Spring Ephemerals
Cape Conservation Corps is once again offering you a chance to purchase hard-to-find early blooming native plants to help support the early pollinators local to our area! Spring ephemerals are crucial for local fauna, especially in ecosystems like forests where these plants bloom early in the spring. These aspects highlight how spring ephemerals are not just beautiful but essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting local wildlife.
Habitat and Food Source: These early blooming flowers, spring ephemerals, bloom before the trees fully leaf out, providing vital food sources for pollinators like bees and butterflies. These plants often have high nutritional value, supporting various herbivores during a period when food is scarce.
Ecosystem Stability: Their root systems help stabilize soil, preventing erosion and enhancing soil structure and health. As they decompose, they contribute organic matter to the soil, enriching it and promoting a healthy ecosystem.
Biodiversity Support: Spring ephemerals are adapted to support specific insect species, increasing local biodiversity. They play a crucial role in food webs, supporting various animals that depend on them for survival.
Seasonal Indicators: The timing of blooming can indicate changes in climate and seasonal shifts, helping ecologists monitor environmental health.
Cultural and Aesthetic Value: Many spring ephemerals have cultural significance, and are tied to cultural practices and traditions, thereby enhancing local heritage. They offer early visual appeal; contributing to the beauty of landscapes, attracting visitors and fostering appreciation for natural spaces.
We will be offering 1 box of 9 plants, 3 of each species, $80 for 1 box. (3 – Sharp Lobed Hepatica, 3 – Rue Anemone, 3 – Large Flowered Bellwort)
