EROSION/RUNOFF CONTROL PROJECT at SERENE RAVINE
CCC recently completed a new project at the Serene Ravine location to control erosion on one of the hillsides. Bill Bower, a Senior Project Manager with Bayland Inc., licensed professional water resources and environmental engineer, as well as a Watershed Steward and CCC volunteer, generously donated his time and expertise to design an erosion control solution that includes several rain gardens and check dams. This project will slow down, spread out, and soak in the runoff from Lake Claire Drive.

On April 18th, CCC volunteers were joined by the Broadneck High School boys’ lacrosse team (Varsity and JV), and the digging began! In four hours, trenches were dug, berms were created, and a rain garden was established. All proper permits and permissions were obtained from Anne Arundel County for the project. Additionally, wood chips were spread to prevent an invasive vine, bush killer, from taking over Serene Ravine. It was amazing how much work was completed that day!
The erosion control site was then planted on May 2nd with native shrubs, trees, and perennials by BHS students, community volunteers, and CCC board members. Shrubs included chokeberry, sweet pepperbush, Itea and winterberry. Ferns, carex, wild ginger, and juncus were also planted. These native plants will put down deep woods to help slow down the runoff. CCC's conservation crew (a.k.a. the Weed Warriors) will continue to monitor and maintain this new installment, along with Serene Ravine in general.
CCC is deeply grateful to Coach McGuire and his assistant coaches and the entire Broadneck High School boys lacrosse team for their tireless work and eager attitudes. They couldn't have been more helpful, and we couldn't have completed this project so quickly without them! Special thanks also to Bill Bower, not only for his time in designing an erosion control solution, but also for providing direction that day. He must have answered a million questions, and he was right there, working with us! Last, but certainly not least, we thank Christy and Benton of Richard's Tree Care for providing wood chips, rip-rap, and prep labor. Richard’s never hesitates to support CCC in our efforts to fulfill our mission. Thank you everyone!!
